We are a grassroots group of volunteers in Aukland who want to build a wireless mesh network to ensure we will not lose the ability to communicate when there is an earthquake or any other kind of disaster. By building community-owned infrastructure using off-the-shelf hardware and open-source technology, we will have a more resilient and redundant communications network in Aukland.
We will build the network using peer-to-peer, decentralized mesh network technology. A mesh network consists of routers (or ‘nodes’) spread throughout the city with no single internet service provider or central servers. All nodes cooperate in the distribution of data, serving as a separate and redundant network. There are numerous cities around the world that have already done this.
Please get in touch if you would like to be involved.
